The international conference “50 years of the International Geophysical Year and the International Electronic Year” was held in the city of Suzdal, Vladimir region on September 16 – 19, 2007. More than 100 scientists of 7 countries (France, Germany, Istrael, Russia, Ukraine, United Kingdome, United States of America) participated in the conference. Results of research in geoinformatics conducted in the last few decades were summed up and new prospects of global research in earth sciences were outlined within the scope of the Electronic Geophysical Year 2007-2008. The conference was timed so that it coincided with the 50th Anniversary of the Geophysical Center RAS, who organized the conference. It was a notable event for the international community in earth sciences. Leaders of important international scientific bodies like the International Council for Science, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, CODATA, and World network of education and scientific exchange participated in the conference. The conference gave impetus to the efforts of scientists from different countries aimed at meeting global challenges of today.
At the conference, the following issues were discussed:
- scientific results of the International Geophysical Year (50 years later);
- the Electronic Geophysical Year;
- the International Polar Year;
- the International Heliophysical Year;
- vital problems of geoinformatics;
- natural disasters and risks in the modern world;
- global change and the climate and joint Russian and French researches in geoinformatics and the physics of the earth, geodynamics, volcanology and seismic risk assessment.
The conference participants stressed the significance of the conference for the integration of earth sciences on the basis of geoinformatics in the studies of our planet. The emphasis was made on the necessity of efficiently coordinating efforts of scientists from different countries to make demonstration products of the Electronic Geophysical Year aimed at solving most vital problems that scientific community confronts at the modern stage of mankind development.
