February 14, 2025. On February 6, at the conference Laverov Readings – 2025, Deputy Director for Science, Chief of the Laboratory of Geodynamics of the GC RAS, Corresponding Member of RAS Viktor Tatarinov presented his report "Burial of High-Level Radioactive Waste in Geological Formations: Problems and Solutions".

According to data for 2016 alone, Russia accumulated radioactive waste with an activity of approximately 5,9 x 109 Curies, with a volume of more than 558 million m3 in 44 regions. "Naturally, it is a giant danger both to the population of our country and to the environment," the speaker emphasized.

Viktor Tatarinov reported that the only feasible way to remove high-level radioactive waste is to bury it in geological formations. This is a technically and economically acceptable solution to close the nuclear fuel cycle. It minimizes the danger, eliminates the spread of radioactive waste, and removes the burden of storing accumulated radioactive waste from future generations.

The Laverov Readings are dedicated to the memory of the outstanding scientist, geologist and geochemist, Vice-President of RAS, Academician of RAS Nikolay Laverov. In 2025, the event was held in Moscow in the Presidium of RAS. A number of reports were presented, united by the theme of solving environmental problems in the context of scientific and technological development of Russia.
