May 21, 2025. The Scientific Seminar of the GC RAS was held on May 21, 2025. D.Sc. Andrey Vorobyov, the head of the Department of Informatics at the Ufa University of Science and Technology and a senior research scientist of the GC RAS, presented a report entitled "Correlation and Statistical Analysis of Big Data in Diagnosing Extreme Geoinduced Currents in the Energy Systems of the Arctic Region".
The impact of space weather on energy systems in the auroral oval area creates significant technospheric risks that require new methods for operational diagnostics. This task is particularly relevant for Arctic regions with a low density of geomagnetic observations and a large shortage of real data. The researcher proposed an original non-hardware method for estimating the level of geoinduced currents in the energy systems of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, based on the correlation and statistical relationships between the geoinduced currents and the aurora borealis (a natural indicator of the state of space weather).
