June 27, 2024. On June 27, 2024, the interregional scientific and expert seminar "The Legacy of M. V. Lomonosov in Historical Memory of Pomorye" was held in Arkhangelsk as part of the All-Russian conference III Yudakhin Readings.

The seminar was opened with the plenary report by Director of the GC RAS Corresponding Member of RAS Anatoly Soloviev "High-precision Observations of the Earth's Magnetic Field: from the Ideas of M. V. Lomonosov to the Present Day".

Anatoly Alexandrovich spoke about how observations of the Earth's magnetic field developed. Before the foundation of the Academy of Sciences, they served just applied purposes: the development of trade and, as a result, river and sea navigation. In 1726, the study of terrestrial magnetism was identified by the Academy as one of the main tasks. The first regular measurements were launched in Saint Petersburg. They continued during expeditions to Siberia, the Far East, and the coasts of the Arctic seas.

Mikhail Lomonosov's ideas were significantly ahead of their time: thus, the improvement of equipment and organization of regular magnetic observatories were implemented only in the 19th century. Anatoly Soloviev spoke about one of the examples of modern magnetic observatories: the Klimovskaya Observatory. It was built and opened by the GC RAS in the homeland of the great Russian scientist. Since 2012, the observatory has been providing high-precision registration of geophysical parameters, the data is available online.

Anatoly Soloviev concluded the report with the quote from Mikhail Lomonosov: "To establish theory with observations, to correct theory with observations is the best way to explore nature."
