March 4, 2025. On March 3, 2025, the Geological Institute RAS hosted a meeting of the Tectonic Colloquium, at which Director of the Geophysical Center RAS, Corresponding Member of RAS Anatoly Soloviev, presented the report "Some Results in the Field of Geoinformatics and Big Data in the Earth Sciences".

The meeting was attended by the scientists of the GC RAS Chief Scientist, Academician of RAS Alexey Gvishiani and Deputy Director for Science, D.Sc. Boris Dzeboev. The event was attended by the members of the ONZ RAS: Member of the RAS Presidium, Academician of RAS Mikhail Fedonkin, Academician of RAS Kirill Degtyarev, corresponding members of RAS Alexey Didenko and Sergey Sokolov, and other prominent scientists.

The report was devoted to geoinformatics, the science of methods and algorithms for collecting, storing, processing, transmitting, and analyzing spatial data on Earth sciences. Geoinformatics methods allow us to adequately model the logic of an expert who analyzes data and makes decisions manually. This makes it possible to work with a large amount of data from initial observations.

Anatoly Soloviev spoke about how geoinformatics methods make it possible to study the processes taking place in all the shells of the Earth and in near-Earth space. The scientist provided information on deep, near-surface and near-Earth geoinformatics, the use of geoinformatics in the study of electromagnetic fields of the Earth, climate, structure of the lithosphere, seismology and tasks of geoecology. Special attention was paid to the results obtained for the Arctic region. Anatoly Soloviev also presented the unique ORBUS Multimedia Complex developed by GC RAS, a hardware and software geoinformation complex.

A computing cluster for processing geomagnetic measurement data in real time has been deployed in the structure of the Analytical Geomagnetic Data Center of the GC RAS. One example of the practical application of these technologies is the geomagnetic support of a high-tech directional drilling.

The report was followed by questions and discussion. In his speech, Academician of RAS Alexey Gvishiani thanked the chairman of the colloquium, Corresponding Member of RAS Sergey Sokolov, and said that "it is a great honor for the Geophysical Center to present our modest results in this area at such an exceptionally respected seminar." Speaking about Big Data in science, Alexey Gvishiani noted: "The Geophysical Center is a small but advanced institute that is trying to take the first steps in this direction. It seems to me that Anatoly Alexandrovich's work deserves encouragement and appreciation, because the possession of Big Data in science is a national treasure."
