February 20, 2025. On February 20, 2025, the Scientific Seminar of the GC RAS was held online. Principal Research Scientist at the Laboratory of Geodynamics of the GC RAS, PhD Vladimir Kaftan presented the report "Modern Movements and Deformations of the Earth's Crust in Connection with Seismicity and Volcanism. The Aegean Sea Region".

The Aegean Sea region shows high seismic activity. The most devastating earthquake was the Samos earthquake (Aegean Sea earthquake) with a magnitude of 7,0 in 2020. Geophysicists at Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi (Turkey) invited scientists of the GC RAS and the Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia to conduct a joint study of seismic deformation processes in the region in connection with the earthquake. Measurement data from GNSS observations, seismicity, and fault tectonics were collected, processed, and summarized. The Russian scientists analyzed the movements and deformations of the Earth's crust based on GNSS observations.

The results obtained does not give grounds to assume the occurrence of strong seismic and volcanic events in the Santorini region in the near future.
