February 7, 2025. Director of the Geophysical Center RAS, Corresponding Member of RAS Anatoly Soloviev told the Nauka TV channel about notable events that took place in 2024 in space research and related fields.
"One of the most important events of 2024 is the beginning of maximum solar activity within the framework of the Solar Cycle 25. The phenomenon is characterized by a series of intense magnetic storms. In particular, an extremely strong G5 class storm occurred on May 10–12 and became the strongest since 2003. This year's storm activity was accompanied by intense auroras, which could be observed even at low latitudes. The scientific community was prepared for this events.
A network of magnetic observatories has been deployed and effectively functioning on Earth, in particular in the Russian Federation, providing the international scientific community with high-quality data on variations in the Earth's magnetic field".
In addition to other scientific events, Anatoly Soloviev noted achievements of the GC RAS. In particular, scientists showed for the first time that the boundary between the Eurasian and American plates in Eastern Siberia represents a rheologically weak diffusive zone.
