28 августа 2025 г. We invite you to participate in the special issue of the journal dedicated to the Kamchatka earthquake of July 30, 2025.
On July 30, 2025, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred in the Kamchatka region. It was the strongest seismic event worldwide since the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake of magnitude 9.1 off the coast of Japan and ranks as the sixth strongest earthquake ever recorded. The earthquake was part of a series of underground tremors that began about ten days earlier in the coastal zone of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Before the main event, about 50 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and higher occurred, including magnitudes between 6.6 to 7.4. More than 20 aftershocks with magnitudes from 5.0 to 6.9 were recorded on July 30 alone. The tsunami triggered by the earthquake flooded the coastal areas.
The goal of this special issue is to consolidate interdisciplinary research aimed at a comprehensive study of the Kamchatka earthquake – from its tectonic precursors and focal dynamics to the assessment of consequences and the effectiveness of disaster risk reduction measures.
