April 20, 2026. On April 12–18, a delegation from the Geophysical Center RAS paid an official visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan. During meetings held at leading scientific and educational institutions in Tashkent and Samarkand, Russian scientists discussed with their foreign colleagues the prospects for implementing joint research projects in geophysics, big data analysis, mathematical modeling, and observatory research.
The GC RAS delegation was headed by Director, Corresponding Member of the RAS Anatoly Soloviev. The delegation also included D.Sc. Boris Dzeboev, Deputy Director for Science; PhD Dmitry Kudin, Chief of the Laboratory of Geophysical Monitoring; and Ekaterina Solovieva, Correspondent of Herald of the Department of Earth Sciences RAS.
On April 13, the GC RAS scientists visited the G. A. Mavlyanov Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (IS AS RUz). The delegation was welcomed by Director D.Sc. Vakhitkhan Ismailov; PhD Ilkhom Alimukhamedov, Deputy Director for Science; Academician of AS RUz Kahkharbek Abdullabekov, and other leading scientists of the Institute of Seismology.
After welcoming remarks, Anatoly Soloviev outlined the main research directions of the GC RAS. Boris Dzeboev presented the GC RAS's results regarding seismic hazard assessment.
Currently, scientists from Russia, Uzbekistan, and Armenia are developing a high-resolution model of the magnetic field of Central Eurasia as part of a joint project. Dmitry Kudin presented a draft of this model, which will be constructed as a result of research by the GC RAS, the IS AS RUz, and the Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology after A. Nazarov of the National Academy of Sciences of Republic Armenia.
During the visit to the institute, the scientists attended the Yangibazar magnetic-ionospheric observatory. With the participation of the GC RAS, it is planned to install and configure modern magnetometric equipment and organize regular registration and collection of geomagnetic measurements.
On April 15, a meeting was held at the IS AS RUz with Vice-President of AS RUz Academician of AS RUz Sirojiddin Mirzaev.
The Vice-President spoke about a working meeting with Academician of RAS Vladislav Panchenko, Vice-President of RAS, and an agreement to expand cooperation between Russian and Uzbek scientists. The Vice-President of AS RUz supported the creation of a laboratory for artificial intelligence and big data within the IS AS RUz. He proposed including GC RAS scientists in its staff. Sirojiddin Mirzaev noted that this would be the first laboratory in the field of applying artificial intelligence methods to analyze seismic events.
One of the main tasks of cooperation between the GC RAS and the IS AS RUz is to conduct continuous measurements of the Earth's magnetic field parameters at the Yangibazar observatory. According to Anatoly Soloviev, one promising area of cooperation could be the creation of a unified earthquake catalog for the Uzbekistan region with a unified magnitude scale.
The meeting participants also discussed the organization of the international interdisciplinary conference "Application of Methods and Models of System Analysis for Assessing Natural Disaster Risks and Developing Effective Measures to Stabilize Degrading Ecosystems", scheduled for October 2026. The organizers of the event are the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis.
The GC RAS delegation also visited a number of leading research and educational organizations in Uzbekistan: the Tashkent University of Information Technologies named after Muhammad al-Khwarizmi, the V. I. Romanovsky Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, the University of Geological Sciences, the Mirzo Ulugbek Samarkand State University of Architecture and Construction, and the Samarkand State University named after Sharof Rashidov.
The meeting participants exchanged scientific experience and discussed promising areas for joint work, such as conducting scientific and educational events and publication cooperation. Russian Journal of Earth Sciences, published by the GC RAS, aroused great interest among the Uzbek colleagues.
