April 5, 2026. Geology plays an important role in our lives: geologists study the structure and composition of the Earth's crust, learn about the Earth's past and assess ongoing changes, obtain fundamental and applied knowledge that serves the rational use of subsurface resources, and much more.

Geologist's Day was established by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on March 31, 1966. The occasion was the discovery of the first deposits of the West Siberian oil and gas province. It was decided to celebrate this day on the first Sunday of April – the time when preparations for expeditions began. Not only geologists but also geophysicists, hydrogeologists, geoecologists, and other specialists involved in the study of the subsurface consider Geologist's Day their professional holiday.

At the Geophysical Center RAS, we conduct both fundamental research, such as studying the tectonics of continents or the Earth's magnetic field, and applied scientific work, such as assessing the safety of a site for creating a nuclear waste repository or improving methods for hydrocarbon extraction.

We organize geological conferences. For example, on May 21–22, 2026, the GC RAS will host the "Exolith-2026" Scientific Conference, which will feature presentations on the study of sedimentary rocks. Our Russian Journal of Earth Sciences publishes scientific works covering geological issues as well. The most important research, including geological, is discussed at the GC RAS Scientific Seminar.

The staff of the GC RAS congratulates colleagues on the holiday and wishes them continued success in their research of our planet.
