October 4, 2023. On October 3, the 79th meeting of the Scientific Council of the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences was held. The election of the scientific director took place at the meeting. In his speech, Scientific Director of the GC RAS Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Dzhermenovich Gvishiani noted the successful work of the Geophysical Center and outlined further work directions: capacity building, scientific and career growth of employees, and popularization of projects. A. D. Gvishiani pointed out the importance of activity within the Russian Academy of Sciences for the Study of the Arctic and Antarctic, joint programs with partners, such as the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Transport, and strengthening ties between the GC RAS and other structures of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A. D. Gvishiani noted the necessity of high publication and dissertation activity and the importance of quality. He mentioned the development of the GC RAS’s workshop, the upcoming successful completion of the Russian Science Foundation Project «System analysis of geophysical process dynamics in the Russian Arctic and their impact on the development and operation of the railway infrastructure,» and further cooperation with the fund. A. D. Gvishiani was again unanimously elected as the scientific director of the GC RAS for another term (2023–2027).

The participants of the meeting also discussed the issues of publication activity and inclusion of the GNSS point at the Klimovskaya Observatory in the Federal Geodetic Stations Network.

The meeting ended with the solemn presentation of the medal of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy for outstanding long service to Leading Researcher of the Geophysical Data Laboratory of GC RAS, Director of the World Data Center (WDC) for Solar-Terrestrial Physics Natalia Aleksandrovna Sergeeva.
