August 1, 2025. On July 30, 2025, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred in the Kamchatka Krai. As a rule, no more than 1–2 earthquakes with such magnitude occur in the world per year, says D.Sc. Boris Dzeboev, Deputy Director for Science of the GC RAS. According to him, the last earthquake in Kamchatka with a comparable magnitude occurred more than 70 years ago. Therefore, such an earthquake is very rare.
The scientist noted that the short-term forecast (for several days) of earthquakes was currently impossible. At the same time, there was significant successes in the medium-term (from several months to several years) and especially in the long-term (for years) forecast.
"For example, in Kamchatka, for many years, earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7.7 have been predicted using the method of Academician of RAS Sergey Fedotov. In his last published work, the area where the recent earthquake occurred was characterized by a fairly high probability of an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 7.75," explains Boris Dzeboev.
