December 25, 2025. On December 24, 2025, the Geophysical Center of RAS hosted a meeting of the Geodesy Section of the National Geophysical Committee of RAS.

In his welcoming speech, Academician of RAS Alexey Gvishiani, Chief Scientist of the GC RAS, noted that «the Geodesy Section of the National Geophysical Committee of RAS is one of the most active and well-organized.» He welcomed the section members and highlighted that, besides himself, two members of the Russian Academy of Sciences were participating: Academician of RAS Valentin Mikhailov and Corresponding Member of RAS Viktor Tatarinov. Alexey Gvishiani conveyed congratulations from the section chairman, Academician of RAS Viktor Savinykh, wished everyone happy upcoming holidays, and expressed confidence that the meeting would involve interesting and productive work.

This was followed by a welcome from D.Sc. Vladimir Kaftan, Deputy Chairman and Scientific Secretary of the Geodesy Section, and Principal Research Scientist at the GC RAS. He greeted the audience and delivered a message marking the 90th anniversary of PhD Vladimir Sidorov, a geodesist and geophysicist, member of the Geodesy Section, and Technical Director of “EcoGeoMunaiGas” in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Vladimir Kaftan noted Vladimir Sidorov’s active work and congratulated him on this milestone.

Geodesists and geophysicists from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, and Novosibirsk participated in the meeting in person and online, representing research institutes, universities, and public organizations.

The first report, titled "Models of the 2025 Kamchatka Earthquakes Based on Satellite Geodesy Data," was presented by Academician of RAS Valentin Mikhailov, Principal Research Scientist at the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth RAS and Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University (along with co-authors).

In subsequent presentations, members of the Geodesy Section delivered reports on an expedition to the Sablinsky network, the 1995 geodetic coordinate system, results from the latest adjustment of the fundamental astronomical-geodetic network within the ITRF system, and the evolution of crustal movements and deformations in relation to seismicity during the preparatory phase of the Kamchatka mega-earthquake (2020–2025).

"The most interesting reports covered more than a century of historical work on the creation of the national coordinate system, from the initial efforts to establish its reference point and to the latest coordinate definitions in the state GNSS network. They addressed both the major achievements of Russian geodesy and the challenging aspects of developing the country's coordinate framework," – said Vladimir Kaftan.

The meeting concluded with a lively discussion on current issues in geodesy and geodynamics.
