April 13, 2026. Today, Pyotr Nikolaevich Shebalin, Corresponding Member of RAS, Director of the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics RAS, is celebrating his anniversary.
Pyotr Shebalin is a geophysicist and seismologist whose work is well known in Russia and abroad. His main scientific interests lie in the study of earthquakes from the perspective of the conditions of their occurrence, monitoring the physical state of the seismogenic environment, and modeling seismic processes. This research is used to develop and implement new approaches to the assessment and prediction of seismic, man-made, and volcanic hazards. Pyotr Shebalin is the author of more than 300 scientific works.
Pyotr Nikolaevich is a member of the Bureau of the Scientific Council of RAS for the Studies of the Arctic and Antarctic, the RAS Scientific Council for Applied Geophysics, the State Commission for the Development of the Arctic, and others. He has been awarded the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland," II class (2022), the Medal "300 Years of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (2024), and the Certificate of Honor of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (2024).
