December 19, 2024. On December 18, the Geophysical Center RAS hosted a meeting of the Geodesy Section of the National Geophysical Committee of Russia.

"There are outstanding guests at the Geophysical Center today. First of all, I would like to welcome Academician of RAS Viktor Savinykh, a cosmonaut and twice Hero of the Soviet Union. The section is always very active and perfectly organizes the final New Year's Eve meetings. I would like to wish you success in your work," said Chief Scientist of the GC RAS Academician of RAS Alexey Gvishiani in his welcoming speech.

The chairman of the Geodesy Section, Academician of RAS, Professor Viktor Savinykh, a cosmonaut, scientist, and public figure, delivered a welcoming speech.

In his welcoming speech, Deputy Chairman of the Geodesy Section, Principal Research Scientist, D.Sc. Vladimir Kaftan noted: "The task of our section is informational. This year we turned 70 years old. We collect information and communicate with international organizations. All this is organized on a voluntary basis, and it is great that we have enthusiasts."

The reports were united by the topic of global coordinate systems and GNSS observations. There were highlighted some regional features of national and global coordinate systems, the scientific potential of the Pulkovo base, the state and prospects for the development of the fundamental astronomical and geodetic network, the state of the GLONASS system, the evolution and nature of the Chandler Wobble, as well as the possibility of predicting the location of a strong earthquake from continuous GNSS observations.

All the reports aroused keen interest, questions, and comments from colleagues. The latest information on the current state and prospects of the most important geodetic directions has been obtained. The meeting ended with an informal and lively discussion.
